Un giorno al CosmoBike / A day at CosmoBike

...as to say, heaven of cycle nerd (or geek, will I ever understand the difference?). Tons of beautifull bikes, carefully designed components and gadgets of the finest quality, with the only flaw (?) of being too new and shiny, as I am used to bunches of rust.
Lots of mountain bikes, and accessories, form packs to clothes to small computer to keep tracks of the journey and of the health of the pilot. Everything was beautifull, everything was beyond my understanding...
Beyond my understanding was each and every component of high level, as well.
But I stared at least 10 minutes to wooden wheels of  Cerchi Ghisallo: I don't know if thay can last, I don't know if they can make sense on a technical point of view, but they are stunning. They showed as well this little marvel: phone camera cannot give you the whole perfection of this crank with three heart inscribed.

3D printers had made their way to repair shop: Aenimal bhulk by Eurocompositi has a plastic frame printed in pieces and than assembled; plastic is recycled. There were no techincal datas about durability and resistance. If this solution is not too expensive compared to availavble frames, it might be a step toward a wider customization of bikes, but compared to usual frames the design is a bit bulky.

Lot of vintage around: Cinzia, with a pastel palette...

Graziella, with a chromium plating a bit too shiny...

Abici gets nostalgia to a different level by building a vintage model anew (more info and a real picture on web site )

TokyoBike is much closer to my urban cyclist point of view and they understand what the real thing is: frame colour. Jokes aside, bikes are super cute: simple citybikes with a clean line.

If you are looking for something frilly,  BikeBelle will take care of your 'needs', including valve decoration in the shape of cupcakes (I sware).
To complete the accessories section, I have to mention  Cingomma and their belts made by repurposed tires, the amount of reused waste is certified by 'Positive causes'. Honor mention to  Leonardi Racing that hits the market on two sides: high quality components and gadgets as kitchen tools shaped as bikes parts.
I was looking for some cargo bikes, but I have found only  PandaBike and Xtracycle.
But there was an abundancy of electric bikes. They are surely handy, very handy. But they give me some cultural issues: they create a blurry boundary between bikes and motorcycles and I don't think this can help cycling colture. We already hear people asking for mandatory helmets for cyclists because 'motorists have it too' on the account of a false equivalence between two different means of transportation. If we throw in such a debate a vehicle that is actually hybrid the confusion will not be avoidable. If you want to read more about this subject check Copenhagenize here.
Another issue: hostess with too little clothes on. Apart from the debate on the female body, apart from the wider debate 'if your product is good don't hide it under pheromones', I don't like seeing cycle culture following car culture.
More over, when it was invented, bike was a powerfull lever in trasforming the social and cultural female role: freedom to move alone without a male help, the need to dress in a less binding way meant a lot for women. In those days, cycling women were accused of different crimes against moral, of leaving children and husband to their fates, even to endanger their fertility because of the jolts of the bike. But the first accusation was to be unfaithful to husbands: what else a woman could do, going out alone? Now, seeing good looking female bodies on display beside a bike, I feel like a short circuit is on, I feel as the old fogies are shouting from the graves 'See? I told you you would get there: you start with a bike, you end in miniskirt!'
The communication short circuit go on with: a Volvo on display, kids bikes with 'Kawasaki' and 'Lambretta' brands on, kids accessori by 'Ferrari'. And if they try to sell you a bike pretending it is a car, maybe it makes sense a  supertechnologic exercise bike advertised as 'intelligent cycling'. The phrase was in english, to pretend that it really made sense...
Afterall, it was much more comprehensible to have communication problems with the brave salesmen of the asian factories: my italian-style-english crashed against their chinese-english with funny results that a transcription cannot express (but the web site is actually in english)
Beyond everything else stands the Nederland embassy, all dressed in orange.
Perfectly kind, they gave me every piece of information I had asked, caring for my questions and keeping a perfect assurance at my Oxford-upon-Po english.
My second raid allowed me to chat for at least a quarter with Amin Mayan, the perfect designer of  Republic Dutch. Excedingly kind and enthusiastic, he had with me a long detailed talk about bikes, culture and design. As a last gift, he gave me his sign, adding 'If I ever get famous, this might have a value'.
Italians often accuse north europeans to be cold and not talkative. But if I compare these guys to others, both in commercial and in administrative roles, I realy feel they had taken me in. And it is not about sweets and fruits offered to the passerby, it is about passion and care.
Anzi, sembrava quasi contento...
At the second place of my personal ranking of 'Chatters' there is the italian salesman of Deutsche Bahn: to advertise the  italian routes  of the german company, he had to take half an hour of my gibberish, and he did not blink an eye. Instead, he almost look happy...
Not ranked, as it has happened ouside the exposition, the long chatter I had with the owner of a foldable cargo bike; especially interesting, because the said cargo has been put on the train, and it has been assembled by the owner, with TRN frame and cargo component by Xtreme. Just the perfect man to share a trip with, talking all the way of: cargobike, urban cicling, turism by bike, bike to school project , cvcling infrastructures and L'Altra Babele.
